La Jolla Volleyball Club is now officially a STARLINGS, USA Affiliate Club!

The Starlings season typically begins with tryouts and team placements in late-February, then local Starlings tournaments take place March-June at Alliant University.

Spring 2022: We will be offering Friday practices and clinics this Spring (for a small drop-in fee), but we will not be forming Starlings teams this year. If you are looking to join a Starlings team, please try out for Clairemont Starlings or Mission Bay Starlings (tryouts start on Thursday February 24, 2022).

We held tryouts and team placements for our inaugural Starlings La Jolla teams in late February 2020… but then had to cancel and refund everything 2 weeks later, due to COVID.

from 2020: We are excited to offer a lower-cost alternative to our longer girls club season, where our teams can participate in local Starlings tournaments March-June. Initially, all La Jolla Starlings teams will practices once a week in March, then pending gym availability, we anticipate adding a second weekday practice for these teams by early April, and/or Sunday practices at a local HS gym.

COVID-19 updates…

If you participated in our Starlings Tryouts in Feb/March 2020, then we have added you to our club-wide emails and hopefully you are receiving updates while we are temporarily shut down to help stop the spread of COVID-19.  We are posting each of our letters & updates on our home page of this website.

As you know, we are very sad that we could not get this new Starlings season going as planned, but we are still hoping to have practices and tournaments in May and/or June.  We are following the guidelines from the Starlings USA National organization and you can visit at their website here: Starlings, USA

UPDATE: Starlings USA has canceled their San Diego Starlings tournament series for Spring 2020.

While we cannot get together, we have created and posted various fitness and volleyball workouts for all of our players, available at no cost…  be sure to check out our New LJV Home Workouts page!

TRYOUTS: Friday March 6, 2020 at the Salvation Army gym (entrance around back)

  • 5:30-7:00pm for 8th graders and younger (14U)
  • 7:15-8:45pm for 9th-12th graders (16U & 18U)

No pre-registration required…  WALK-INs welcome!

Please bring a parent/guardian with you, as we’ll need an adult to fill our paperwork and waiver for tryouts.  Paperwork to bring to tryouts:

  • LJV Waiver 2020 (blank paper copies will be at the gym, or print this one and bring to gym with you)
  • LJV_PLAYER_INFO (blank paper copies will be at the gym, or print this one and bring to gym with you)

Our goal is to accept all players who want to play volleyball; we will strive to not make cuts 🙂

LOCATION (Feb. 2020):

The Salvation Army (“TSA”) gym, 4170 Balboa Ave, at corner of Clairemont Blvd.  GYM ENTRANCE around back…  just across the street from Clairemont High School!

Other practice locations will be added by April.

PRACTICES:

  • Fridays March 6th (tryouts/placement), 13th, 27th: same time slots as the tryouts (14U and 16/18U slots)
  • We plan to add a 2nd weekday practice in April-May-June (maybe in March TBA), pending gym availability, either on another weekday or possibly on Sundays, TBA
  • Additional practices outdoors are also an option.

STARLINGS TOURNAMENTS:

  • Sat 3/28 – Alliant University
  • Sat 4/11 – Alliant University
  • Sun 4/26 – Alliant University
  • Sun 5/3 – Alliant University
  • Sun 5/17 – Alliant University (Outdoor Grass Tourney)
  • Sun 6/7 – Alliant University (San Diego County Championships)
  • Fri 6/19-21 – ASC, Anaheim (3-day Starlings National Championships; optional add-on)

COST / FEES:

First deposit due Friday March 13th, payable by cash or check, made out to La Jolla Volleyball:  $175.00  This initial payment will cover player registration fees, 3/28 Starlings tournament, player jersey, coach stipend, insurance, equipment and gym, and 4 March practices.

Balance of fees for remainder of season will be finalized by end of March but expect range of $375-$440, depending on number of practices we can schedule/confirm for April-May-June.

Above fee estimates cover March 13th through June 7th San Diego County Starlings Championships tournament.  Additionally, if a team will be going to Starlings National Championships in Anaheim June 19-21, that will be an additional expense, to cover tournament entry fees, coach stipend, lodging, and additional practices.

Exact season costs for your team will be finalized depending on number of practices per month, and other expenses to be finalized around tryouts time.
