Jeff Hoang was born and raised in San Diego, California. He attended Miramar College and the University of California, San Diego, studying Cognitive Science with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction.
Jeff began his volleyball career in 2014 as part of Miramar College’s inaugural men’s volleyball roster. His coaching journey started in 2023 with Gil Johnson Recreation Center’s 12U team, where he quickly developed a passion for mentoring young athletes. In 2024, he joined the coaching staff at High Tech High Mesa as the Head Junior Varsity Coach, also assisting the varsity squad during their historic championship run that secured the school’s first CIF banner. That same year, he became the Head Coach for La Jolla Volleyball Club’s 13/14U Locals team. Jeff now returns to High Tech High Mesa as an Assistant Varsity Coach.
His coaching philosophy emphasizes building a strong foundation of fundamental volleyball skills, then refining and expanding each athlete’s abilities with advanced techniques to grow their volleyball toolbag. “My favorite part of coaching is helping an athlete problem-solve how to overcome a hurdle they’ve been struggling with. I’m a bit stubborn and prefer to try reframing a player’s approach to a problem until they reach that breakthrough “I UNDERSTAND IT NOW!” moment.”
Outside of volleyball, Jeff has an extensive background in esports. From 2012 to 2017, he was a founding member of Triton Gaming at UC San Diego and later joined professional esports organization FlyQuest in 2017 as Team Manager and Community Manager. In that role, he oversaw day-to-day operations, managed international talent, supported player health and wellbeing, and fostered an environment for developing North American talent. His team achieved multiple championship appearances, and in 2020, FlyQuest represented North America at the League of Legends World Championship Series in China.
Today, Jeff divides his time between San Diego and Los Angeles, actively coaching and playing volleyball in San Diego while also working for content creators and game publishers in Los Angeles.
