Hudl & SportsRecruits

LJV season fees include Hudl for travel (SCVA) teams and SportsRecruits for high school-aged (SCVA) travel teams, so please take advantage of both of these platforms!

Hudl

Hudl is a software platform that is used to store and process game videos, create stats after games, and make it VERY EASY to create your own highlight videos.

After a game, Hudl Assist will “tag” each play for each player and this generates stats on the Reports page where you can click on your own stats and plays to just watch your own touches (and create highlight videos and playlists).

Parent Help

Hudl does require someone to record/film the matches, then enter team/game information and submit it to Hudl (after the games are uploaded over wi-fi).

Each team needs a parent who is willing to help set up the LJV-supplied Hudl iPad/tripod and film each game.  LJV will create a “coach” login for that team parent and provide them with a brief Hudl training. After each game, you’ll “Save & Exit” and make sure the game is labeled with the correct opponent name. Then, take the iPad & tripod home and plug in the iPad at your house, connect to wi-fi, and make sure the videos upload to Hudl.  The coaches will then be able to enter the additional game details (starting rotations, jersey colors, sets) and submit the game video to Hudl Assist for tagging. Once the tagging is complete (within 24 hours or less) then everyone will be able to see the Reports chart of every play and all stats and easily watch your touches and/or make highlight videos.

Here are some helpful tips for filming:

Player Login

Use of Hudl by players is optional but strongly encouraged!

Each player can only have one email address for access to Hudl, so we’ve entered the PLAYER’s email address.  You should receive an email invitation from Hudl to join. You’ll be asked to create a password and we recommend making a very simple password that you can also share with your family. If you have not received a Hudl email, you can go to Hudl.com and log in with the player’s email address as it should link to your team.  If we do not have an email address for a player, then we use a parent email. (But we can update/change if necessary, just send Barb an email).

Check out your stats/plays via Hudl

If you want to see a highlight video of your own personal plays after a tournament, here’s a quick way to it:

  • Log in to HUDL (with player’s email address; only one email address per player allowed, share password with your family)
  • Go to the Reports page
  • On the left-side column:
    • Matches: click on View Other Matches (it’s in blue) and you can select a few/any/all Matches
    • Group By: select “Athlete
    • Stat Type: select “Totals” (instead of Averages)
  • Then, in the stats area on the right, find the stat you’re most interested in (hitting, assists, serve attempts, digs, etc) and click on the number.  Hudl will then show you all of the clips of those plays, and you can send those clips to a “playlist” which you can edit, alter, and email to yourself…  Have fun!

Tip: When you want to see your hits, don’t just click on the number under the “Kills” column, click on the attempts (“H Att”) so that you’ll see all of your hit attempts.  Sometimes your strongest hits aren’t always kills, and they might be worthy of including in your video as well.

There are LOTS of very helpful tutorial videos on Hudl about making your own personal videos, highlights, clips, labels, etc.  All of your game film will be there from this season and whenever we submit a game for stats analysis, it makes it even easier to find your own plays and generate a highlight reel!

Tagging Errors

Hudl occasionally makes errors and accidentally “tags” the wrong player, but if you notice that then let us know right away since we can go back in and modify/fix errors. All players should contact their coach via email or text and let them know which game, what timestamp, which player was credited with the play, and what correction should be made.

Hudl Highlights

Hudl automatically creates a highlight video as soon as the tagging & stats are complete. This is not necessarily the best plays or the most accurate, although it’s fun to watch.  For player videos to send to college coaches, you should select your own best plays to create a personal highlight reel approx 1-2 minutes long.

SportsRecruits is a platform where you share information about yourself to potentially get recruited by college coaches: upload a headshot, a personal statement, your GPA (optional), achievements, upload videos, send emails directly to college coaches, etc. (Do NOT send college coach emails until your profile is updated and you have a highlight video and you’ve had a coach review your first email).

SportsRecruits also has a great college search feature where you can check out essential details of colleges such as size, location (good map tool), average admission GPA, enrollment, and division, and you can even see highlight videos of other players who have committed to those schools. You can “favorite” all the schools that you’re interested in, and it will not notify the college coach.  We strongly recommend adding some personal info to your SportsRecruits page. We’ve had college coaches look at one player, then check out her teammates’ profile on SportsRecruits if they are looking for another position, so be ready in case that happens!

On your LJV team page, there’s a direct embed link to your own SportsRecruits pages, for public viewing.
